Mentor Recruitment

This forum is for discussing the recruitment of volunteer mentors. We encourage you to share effective practices and ask questions about targeting specific volunteer groups.

Michelle Obama can help you recruit mentors!

What better way to recruit new volunteers than to leverage the First Lady's endorsement of youth mentoring and appeal for more adults to mentor young people. I was lucky enough to see her speak at MENTOR's National Mentoring Summit on Tuesday and her message was very powerful. Why not use it as an additional recruitment tool for your program?

criteria for mentor clearance with background check "record"

Anything involving child/sexual abuse permanently disqualifies a mentor.
If someone were arrested for drug use/possession, 20 years ago with no further problems, would you disqualify this indivual from mentoring?

Do you have program policies around: length of time since incarceration?

if crime were a theft?

kinds of drug offenses: use vs sale, vs being arrested for being present at an exchange?

I'm trying to create some examples...looking for thoughts from you....

Incentives for mentors

Hello,

We are a juvenile diversion mentoring program working with youth offenders ages 14-17. Are any mentoring programs offering incentives or stipends to their volunteers? Any suggestions on what works well for incentives?
We are currently considering gas gift cards awarded after participating in 10 mentoring activities. We are able to offer mentors mileage reimbursement and small stipends to help cover the cost of activities.

Any resources or suggestions would help.

Thanks!!

Help! I am the Coordinator of a small rural mentoring program and have run this program successfully for almost 11 years.

My problem: I am feeling stalled in my recruitment efforts. Finding new mentors at the moment seems incredibly challenging and I feel like I need some new ideas.

Who is creating videos and how much are the helping you recruit volunteers or donors

H

Here's a web site that I found which is aggregating videos under a tutor/mentor title. There are a couple of videos on this list by Cabrini Connections, which is the program I lead.

Connect your mentor recruitment strategy to other programs and other cities

I encourage you to visit this page and review the calendar of events that we organize each year in Chicago.

You'll see a conference in May, a recruitment campaign in August, as school is starting, and another conference in November, just before the holidays when donors are becoming more generous.

Mentor Motivations

During MENTOR's Recruitment and Screening webinar, we discussed the importance of managing expectations of mentors during the recruitment and training process to ensure that they understand the role of mentoring and what they are embarking on (the joys AND challenges...). Research(1) has shown that unfulfilled expectations can contribute to earlier than expected ending of mentoring relationships. When preconceived notions of mentoring do not materialize, mentors may decide that the relationship is not what they agreed to and back out of the commitment.

Male Recruitment Resources

One of the topics discussed on the recent webinar on mentor recruitment and screening conducted by MENTOR was recruitment of male volunteers. Obviously, this can be a tricky population to reach for mentoring programs. Here are a few resources that can get your program thinking about ways to reach out to men:

Mentor Michigan's Men in Mentoring Toolkit (this was discussed during the webinar):

Ethics in Mentoring

MENTOR will host a webinar on Recruitment and Screening on March 29, 2010 at 1:00 pm, EST. The focus of the webinar will be to discuss the new recruitment and screening benchmarks from MENTOR's Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring, 3rd edition.
