Training Mentors "How to practically connect with Youth"

Friends,

I am new to this forum. I do youth ministry at a church in Oakland, Fl. We are looking to start a mentor program with our students. I am looking for some practical "tips" or activities that our mentor leaders can do with our students. We work with Middle and High School students. Any Suggestions would be appreciated.

Peace be with you...

Great new curriculum for mentor training

The Corporation for National and Community Service has released a wonderful new resource for training mentors: Supporting Children and Youth: Mentor Training for Senior Corps Volunteers.

This curriculum provides training in eight key areas and comes complete with facilitator notes, powerpoints, and other useful tools. A full listing of the topics is below. The entire curriculum can be downloaded free at:

Icebreaker Ideas

Icebreakers are a great way to kick-off a mentor training, build a sense of community during a group event or to welcome new matches to your existing mentoring group. Icebreakers come in many forms ranging from simple getting-to-know-you prompts to full blown physical activities.

One of my all time favorites is to simply ask the question: “What is your dream job and why?” Answers to this prompt reveal a lot about people’s passions, dreams, and skills.

What are your favorite icebreakers?

Webinar on Matching Mentors and Mentees, Dec 9th

Our good friends at MENTOR are hosting another event in their excellent series of webinars building on the new Elements of Effective Practice:

New Grant Awarded for Developing Mentor Training

I know many Forum visitors may have already seen this announced by MENTOR through their MENTOR Minute, but I thought I'd mention it here as well.

Dr. Janis Kupersmidt has received a $1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to further develop an innovative new mentor training program. The training, which tries to build mentor skills around evidence-based best practices, will have many interesting features (from the press release):

Mentoring Lifecycle in training

Does anyone have an interactive method of teaching incoming volunteer mentors the "Mentoring Lifecycle"?
We incorporate this in our mentor training but it is more lecture coupled with handouts. On today's webinar of training benchmarks it was recommended this be interactive.
Any suggestions/resources?

Training Idea: Understanding Family Dynamics

Hi,

I recently discovered the Strong Bonds Project when I was searching for resources to share with mentors about family dynamics. This site is a useful resource for ongoing mentor training and staff development.

From the Strong Bonds site:

Learning Mentors - Where have you heard about this?

I just came across this term "learning mentors."
I am beginning my disseration in a doctorate program for educational leadership.
Has anyone heard much about this idea?
I found a website about it based out of the UK. I'm wondering if it has picked up in the states at all.
I welcome your thoughts.
