Peer Mentoring for College Freshmen

Hi everyone,

NAU has recently started up a peer mentoring program for out of state students. We have made it through our first semester and have some really great stats. We are now in our second semester and things appear to be going well except about 50 students have dropped the program. Most say they are too busy to participate. Does anyone have any ideas on how we could make these people want to stay connected to us?

Thanks,
kelley

Class to Class mentoring

Does anyone currently use classroom to classroom programming? If so, how is it structured? Is it directed mostly by the teachers? curriculum? needs? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently working with two new schools for this programming. Thanks!

Peer mentoring research on impacts for peer mentors

Today as I was cleaning off my computer desktop I ran across an article by Dr. Michael Karcher, a leading peer mentoring champion and researcher at the University of Texas, San Antonio. This scholarly article, titled "Increases in Academic Connectedness and Self-Esteem Among High School Students Who Serve as Cross-Age Peer Mentors" (April 2009) is one of a handful that investigate the impact of peer mentoring on the mentors themselves. I think we often assume, and anecdotally we are reasonably justified in assuming, that peer mentors will benefit from the mentoring experience.

Welcome to the Peer Mentoring Forum!

Welcome to this forum on peer mentoring! I am a big fan of peer mentoring (or cross-age mentoring, as it's oftern called) because it has such a strong youth development foundation, and because it can have so many positive outcomes for both mentor and mentee. So as the official "host" of this forum I'm looking forward to hearing from you about how you are implementing this model in your schools and communities. This is a place where we can share resources, offer ideas and advice, ask questions, and have lively discussions about peer mentoring approaches.
