Match Support and Supervision

This forum is for discussing strategies for supervising matches, providing support to struggling matches, and ensuring that mentors and mentees are confident and happy with their participation in your program.

Online Mentor/Mentee Activity Tracking Form

Hello,

Based on requests from the field, I created an on-line Google form that feeds data into a spreadsheet that programs can customize and use to collect monthly mentor/mentee activities.

Seeking suggestions on how to promote participant accountability

Hello,

New Webinar (Dec. 15) Focuses on Ongoing Match Support

MENTOR's excellent series of webinars on running an effective program continue with one scheduled for December 15th on the topic of monitoring and supporting matches. Obviously, match support is a key aspect of fostering program success, and I'm thrilled that MENTOR has brought in my former colleague Christian Rummell to deliver this session. Christian really knows this topic and will do a great job of exploring the nuances of keeping your matches safe and on track over time.

Mentor disappointment in match

I have a mentor and mentee who have been matched for 7 weeks. The mentor has just shared with me that she is finding that she only wants to spend the minimum time with her mentee and has to "talk herself into seeing her each week". Concerns from this mentor seem to center around the mentees poor hygeine, racial prejudices openly expressed by the mentee (both mentor and mentee are caucasion), and poor social manners when out in public. The mentor shared, "I had high hopes of having fun with her, and it's just not that fun".

the art of listening - helping mentors and mentees communicate

I subscribe to an interesting e-newsletter put out by Nonprofit Risk Management, a group that does great work in all areas of managing risk in the nonprofit world. Today's article was on managing employee conflicts in the workplace, but it struck me that all of the advice in this article is equally applicable to the mentor/mentee relationship. So I thought I'd share it with you.

This quote in particular stood out for me:

“There is only one test for the effectiveness of any communication, and that is what the listener understands.”

Handling Sensitive Situations

I would like to see your input in how to handle a situation where a parent feels the mentor is taking the place of the father/mother. In your opinion, how should the parent be approach with out hurting the mentor-mentee relationship?

Supporting mentors working with immigrant/refugee populations

I just posted information in the "publications and mentoring research" forum about a new brief from the Center for Health and Health Care in Schools that talks about the unique mental and emotional health needs of immigrant/refugee students and stresses working with the whole family to address these needs. It discusses how simply working on academic and language skills isn't going to work with many of these youth unless their mental and emotional health issues are also addressed.
