2009 - When will OJJDP announce mentoring grant awardees?
2009: It looks like the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention is starting to roll out the recipients of the Recovery Act Local Youth Mentoring Initiative funds. So far they have announced about a dozen awards, but we expect them to release many more. You can track the announcements here:
I've worked with the program at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. I feel their grant was supported because of the role the university is playing in pulling the different partners together. I'd like to see more universities take this role, and would hope to find one that would partner with the Tutor/Mentor Connection.
Congratulations to all the winners. The big challenge is, how do we find funding for the programs who do not win these grants, but cannot survive without consistent revenue?
Any way to find out how many more grants will be awarded and when?
This morning a press release by Eric Holder announced the award of National Mentoring Initiatives grants, both Recovery and non-recovery funding. These are grants given to large organizations that have a national presence. Below is the text of the press release. You can also see the press release online here.
Hopefully we'll begin to see more of the local mentoring grant awards soon!

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES $129 MILLION IN AWARDS TO SUPPORT YOUTH MENTORING
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder today announced more than $129 million in Recovery Act and Fiscal Year 2009 funds have been awarded for mentoring services to help prevent at-risk youth from becoming involved in delinquency. The grants will also preserve and create jobs throughout the United States.
“The Recovery Act has allowed us to invest further in the future of today’s youth by providing mentoring opportunities to help children reach their full potential,” said Attorney General Holder. “These grants will help steer young people away from criminal activities by providing them with healthy life alternatives, positive role models and direct contact with caring adults.”
The Recovery Act, signed into law by President Obama, provides the Office of Justice Programs’ Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) with more than $85 million for national mentoring programs to reduce juvenile delinquency, violence, gang participation, school failure and dropout rates. The Recovery Act National Mentoring award recipients are:
* The Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Atlanta, Ga. ($44,400,000)
* Goodwill Industries International, Rockville, Md. ($19,160,337)
* Public/Private Ventures, Philadelphia, Pa. ($17,829,110)
* National Association of Police Athletic Activities Leagues Inc., Jupiter, Fla. ($3,700,000)
The statutes appropriating funds for Fiscal Year 2009 authorize OJJDP’s National Mentoring Programs initiative. The awards of more than $44 million were made to programs that target underserved and at-risk youth. The Fiscal Year 2009 National Mentoring award recipients are:
* Home Builders Institute, Washington, D.C. ($9,949,890)
* The Milton S. Eisenhower Foundation, Washington, D.C. ($9,093,440)
* YouthBuild USA, Somerville, Mass. ($8,840,914)
* Young Men’s Christian Association, San Francisco, Calif. ($7,129,327)
* The Institute for Educational Leadership, Washington, D.C. ($3,496,766)
* Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Inc., Lenexa, Kan. ($3,251,170)
* The Experience Corps, Washington, D.C. ($2,762,022)

This is a nice reading. It has a lot of beneficial factors for the youth. I hope that this Recovery Act could pursue and continue its mission in helping our children become role models and good citizens of our society.Like the share and thank you for the post.
Great information - received word from ojjdp program manager that all local mentoring initiative awards have been announced - I thought that there were going to be many more awards - http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/recovery/Mentor_Awards.htm. Any thoughts?
The US Department of Justice has additional information on its Web site with some of the NON-Recovery Mentoring Grant Awardees. Please note that THIS LIST IS NOT FINAL YET. They will continue to update it as grantees are notified. All awardees should be notified by close of business tomorrow.
I navigated the list by searching for mentoring. Here are the page numbers of a few of the mentoring specific awards.

Congratulations to all of the awardees and we look forward to hearing about more in the coming days.
How long does it take after the peer review to know if a co. has won an award?
Most of OJJDP's solicitations have a date -- usually Sept 30, the last day of the fiscal year -- by which announcements will be made. Even if peer review occurs in spring or early summer, announcements often aren't made until September. As with all grants, OJJDP may contact you with additional questions/revisions before making a final decision/announcement. Congressional offices are notified first of decisions, then the person listed as the contact on the grant is contacted (note that notification goes to the contact listed on your grant cover form as the person with signature authority and is sometimes a fiscal authority, district superintendent, school principal or someone who oversaw the proposal process rather than the person who will oversee the project). The last step is a public announcement. If you are waiting for information on whether you have received a grant, you might want to check with your congressional offices.
Note that in past years OJJDP has issued public announcements for the various mentoring funding streams in the last couple of weeks of September.
It sounds like OJJDP is starting to announce awards of the Best Practices in Mentoring research initiative. Anyone have any news on the awards?
According to Youth Today, OJJDP has started alerting grant winners for Fiscal 2010 solicitations, although there is next to no information as of yet, and it is not clear which funding streams are receiving notifications. Youth Today reports that, "winning proposals are getting an automatic alert of some sort sent to them from Grants.gov."
A couple of things to remember:
- Usually the individual with fiscal and signing authority listed on the grant cover sheet gets notified first (along with congressional offices).
- On most of the funding streams they have until Sept 30 to notify recipients.
- Last year some information was available on their funding website as it was available. Also, Youth Today in their JJ forum often has good info.
Hi all - I just found a place where you can view current year grant awards for all of OJP, listed by the name of the initiative. Click here to see them - you have to scroll down to the listings for OJJDP and then they are listed alphabetically. Not all have been announced - the larger mentoring initiatives such as the national and Multi-state ones are not there yet, but the mentoring research ones and a couple of others are.
