Mentee Safety Training?
Fri, 06/12/2009 - 08:24
Hello!
I am looking for one-on-one safety training ideas for mentess. How can one talk about appropriate/inappropriate or good/bad touch to a child? I am worried about the child not wanting to have a mentor or the parent not wanting to sign up. In addition, it might bring out some past events or put new things in the child's head.
How do other programs train their mentees regarding safety? What are your procedures?
Thanks,
Juie Deo

Re: Mentee Safety Training?
Thanks! These are some great resources.
I wanted to also know what other programs do?
Thanks,
juie

Juie: We have had the following suggestions in the past on the edmentoring forum from other programs for what they use that you may find helpful:
• Kidpower http://www.kidpower.org/SERVICES/Children.html offers training and resources for training children and youth about safety.
• Prevent Child Abuse America has all sorts of information on working with kids to prevent sexual abuse including age appropriate pamphlets and activities for working with youth http://www.preventchildabuse.org/publications/index.shtml
• The Child Welfare Information Gateway of the Administration for Children and Families, US Dept of Health and Human Services has the following list of recommended materials and resources: http://www.childwelfare.gov/preventing/programs/types/sexualabuse.cfm
• The National Crime Prevention Council: http://www.ncpc.org/topics/by-audience/parents also has some materials designed for kids.
Also, depending on the age of the youth, some of the materials for mentor training on issues of safety and crisis management may also be adaptable for mentee training http://www.edmentoring.org/pubs/ongoing_training.pdf Similarly, these online publications on mentor and mentee training might have something you could adapt:
Responsible Mentoring: Talking About Drugs, Sex and Other Difficult Issues www.emt.org/userfiles/RespMentoringBooklet.pdf
Preparing Mentees for Success: A Program Manager's Guide www.emt.org/userfiles/MenteeSeries6.pdf
