MENTOR is pleased to join with Friends for Youth's Mentoring Institute to present a webinar on incorporating SafetyNET and SAFE Practices in Volunteer Programs on Thursday, May 6, 2010 from 1:00 - 2:30 pm, EST. Sarah Kremer, Program Director for Friends for Youth's Mentoring Institute, will discuss the research on the characteristics and behaviors of child molesters and highlight recommended tools, red flags, and monitoring processes. By attending this webinar, participants will become aware of the prevalence of child predators and tactics employed in targeting victims in community youth-serving organizations; learn about latest research on child molester profiles and potential warning signs to be aware of during application and monitoring processes; obtain resources on screening tools and guidelines to apply in order to maximize the safety of children and youth served.

This webinar will feature information on how to apply to and use SafetyNET to conduct background checks. Operated by MENTOR, SafetyNET allows mentoring programs to conduct FBI fingerprint-based background checks on prospective mentors.

Register for this free webinar today--space is limited.

Boy Scouts of America and Child Molestation Cases

Youth Today recently published two articles about the recent Boy Scout scandal.

Learning from Molesters: What the Scout Scandal Teaches Us

Jury Deems Boy Scouts Negligent in Handling Sex Abuse

The first article provides eye-opening information on how child molesters gain the trust of children and provides an awareness of what we can be on the look out for and in mentoring programs and as parents or as people who care about kids.

Read the articles and tell us what you think...we will be discussing these articles in next week's webinar...

Re: MENTOR to host Webinar on Screening and Background Checks

I participated in this webinar today and found it to be very insightful. I learned about Mentoring Forum via the webinar. I just signed up with Mentoring Forum and look forward to gaining further knowledge from other mentoring professionals.

Re: MENTOR to host Webinar on Screening and Background Checks

Welcome! Hope you find the information in the various discussion areas helpful.

Did anyone have an "ah ha" moment during the screening webinar? I know that's a topic where sometimes a program will realize that they need to change their approach on something or tighten up some aspect of their screening process. Was just curious about what folks thought were the critical takeaways...
