Learning Mentors - Where have you heard about this?

I just came across this term "learning mentors."
I am beginning my disseration in a doctorate program for educational leadership.
Has anyone heard much about this idea?
I found a website about it based out of the UK. I'm wondering if it has picked up in the states at all.
I welcome your thoughts.
