Ethics in Mentoring
MENTOR will host a webinar on Recruitment and Screening on March 29, 2010 at 1:00 pm, EST. The focus of the webinar will be to discuss the new recruitment and screening benchmarks from MENTOR's Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring, 3rd edition.
Dr. Renee Spencer of Boston University will be joining us to discuss the role of expectations when recruiting mentors. She will also discuss ethical guidelines based on the publication she co-authored, First do no harm: Ethical principles for youth mentoring relationships." Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, Rhodes, J., Liang, B, & Spencer, R. (2009).
The role of ethics in mentoring has a tremendous impact on mentors and how they develop trust and a bond with their mentee. Please join us to talk about the role of ethics in mentoring and your program practices (e.g. recruitment and training) can incorporate ethics training. After Monday's webinar, we will futher discuss the role of ethics on mentoring and how recruitment and training can address ethical issues that arise throughout mentoring relationships.
Based on the interest in this topics, we may hold a specific forum on ethical principles and how to train and provide support to mentors.
There are some really excellent examples on ethical issues that may seem benign but have the potential to undermine the trust and comfortabillity in a relationship.
