Hi everyone - Great news from our friends at MENTOR! President Obama has signed into law the bill to extend the Child Safety Pilot, SafetyNET. This is the program that allows mentoring organizations to conduct fingerprint-based criminal background checks on potential mentors through the FBI's master criminal record database in a cost-effective and timely way.

MENTOR now will resume full program operations, processing fingerprint cards submitted since January 31. The extension runs through March of 2011.

MENTOR has also opened the door to allow new programs to register for access to SafetyNet, so if your program is not already registered you should consider applying for this incredibly useful tool for screening. The cost is still set at $18 per check, so it's a good deal indeed. The program is open to nonprofit organizations who have formal mentoring programs and meet certain criteria. To learn more about the program and how to apply, go to:

Re: Safety Net background checks program extended for ...

I understand SafetyNet no longer will be able to do background checks after March 2011. I am now in the process of figuring out an alternative way to have nationwide checks done. Are there any suggestions?
