In Fiscal Year (FY) 2010, the Corporation for National and Community Service will award up to $50 million in Federal funding to an estimated seven to 10 intermediary organizations. Intermediary organizations – grantmaking institutions – will apply for SIF funding and then make sub-grants (of $100,000 or more) to a portfolio of promising nonprofit organizations, matching federal dollars one to one, at each stage in the process. Intermediaries will also be expected to provide a range of strategic supports to their portfolio organizations, including in the areas of management, fundraising, and especially, evaluation. The SIF will require funded intermediaries to focus resources on promising nonprofit organizations with “rigorous evidence of impact.”

The three identified areas of strategic importance are:

  • Economic Opportunity – Increasing economic opportunities for economically disadvantaged individuals
  • Youth Development and School Support – Preparing America’s youth for success in school, active citizenship, productive work, and healthy and safe lives
  • Healthy Futures – Promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing the risk factors that can lead to illness
