OJJDP has released its proposed FY2010 Program Plan for review and comment http://ojjdp.ncjrs.gov/funding/FY10OJJDPProposedPlan.pdf. There are many aspects of the plan that will be interesting to mentoring professionals and anyone serving youth, and may serve as a window into the future in terms of some of OJJDP's current priorities. Hopefully lots of people, and some of you, will comment at www.regulations.gov/search/Regs/home.html#documentDetail?R=0900006480a61626. The mentoring specific section is on page 62826. The draft plan has many components, including:

  • A proposed new program for mentoring & juvenile drug courts
  • A proposed new program for mentoring college age Native American women
  • Proposed collaboration with the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative to provide school-based services including mentoring.
  • Continuation of national and local mentoring initiatives
  • The creation of a National Girls Institute as a major TA and research provider
  • An increased emphasis on programs to support and treat children exposed to violence, such as new funding to extend the SAFE START Program to Native American Communities
  • Increased funding and new programs under the Second Chance Youth Offender Reentry Initiative
  • A New Community Violence Prevention program modeled after CEASEFIRE in Chicago
  • Creation of a Juvenile Justice Evaluation Center

Comments on the Proposed Plan must be received by January 15, 2010, and may be submitted online or mailed to OJJDP. As security protocols can significantly delay OJJDP's receipt of mail, online submission of comments is recommended to ensure their consideration.

To view OJJDP's Proposed Plan and detailed guidance on submitting comments, visit ojjdp.ncjrs.gov/funding/FY10OJJDPProposedPlan.pdf.

Comments may be submitted online at www.regulations.gov/search/Regs/home.html#documentDetail?R=0900006480a61626.

A copy of the Proposed Plan is also accessible from this page.
