This issue of Child Trends and the Wallace Foundation takes a comprehensive look at summer learning programs and will be of interest to school-based mentoring programs and mentoring programs with an academic focus. The report reviews research on summer learning program outcomes for low-income children and identifies the characteristics of effective programs such as experienced staff, small groups, and fun activities. The report finds reading and math achievement gains are possible, and references and reinforces the research on school-based mentoring about the importance of including activities during the summer months.
