Athlete Mentors ?
Hello everyone! It is wonderful to see a group of such enthusiastic and dedicated people ..
I am looking for education programs that use athlete/former athlete mentors to teach underpriveleged minority youth. The approach can be broken into two categories:
(1) Organizations that empower athletes with knowledge/tools needed to succeed in the business world.
*(2) Organizations that use these athletes as effective role models for underpriveleged minority youth.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Together we can do big things.
Sincerely,
Alex :)
Another good example that includes athletes as mentors, but also involves raising money for mentoring and other youth programs is the Memphis Grizzlies Charitable Foundation:

Here is information on their mentoring activities: http://www.nba.com/grizzlies/community/foundation-mentoring.html
Read the articles on the Cabrini Blog that we've written about engaging athletes and team concepts in a tutor/mentor program.
Here's a fund raising strategy, where we're trying to create a competition between former football players and alumni of Northwestern and Illinois to see which group can raise more money for Cabrini Connections, Tutor/Mentor Connection before the annual football game in November.
Imagine if alumni from Southern Cal and Notre Dame were competing to raise money for one or more tutor/mentor programs where their alumni are involved?

Hi Alex. Here is an example that is generating a lot of excitement here in Oregon, in which a prominent athlete (Greg Oden, go Blazers!) has joined our state Mentoring Partnership (go Oregon Mentors!). The youth events with Greg Oden have been a wonderful hit with the kids.
